Que sera, sera.
Whatever will be, will be.
The future’s not ours to see.
Que sera, sera.
What will be, will be.Doris Day
In life, there come moments where you are at a crossroads, or perhaps a junction of so many roads. The problem is that you have no idea where each one of those leads. Having said that, had you a choice, there would certainly be roads leading to certain destinations which you would never take. It is unavoidable to ponder, reflect, worry, and be anxious as the uncertainty hangs like a sword of Damocles. But what do you actually gain by being in that constant state of anxiety? A racing heart, a heavy forehead, a dimmed mood, and a rush of cortisol that makes your day unsavory.
In such a moment, where logic does not define the outcome, where your own strength and determination have next to no effect, and where the help and guidance of a dear friend sound like screaming into an empty space, perhaps you could recall Doris Day’s famed song lyrics: Que sera, sera. Whatever will be, will be.
It is not necessarily accepting defeat, nor letting fate simply take its path, nor even allowing Karma to take its course. It is a simple way to put your weight down and give yourself a much-needed release. Holding a tenuous, difficult emotion or a worry so tightly to your chest makes you feel stuck in a time loop, like being imprisoned in a never-ending nightmare.
Life is not always a bed of roses; our journeys are not always in clear directions. We are not perfect, and we can easily get lost in a messy maze. We may not always find our usual strength, wisdom, calm composure, positive energy, or resilience. And that is okay.
You are only human, and that is part of living. Just utter que sera, sera until the weight of the world on your shoulders is relieved. It is not running away, nor is it losing. We all need a little break; do not let your ego stop you from accepting reality for what it is. Stop for a minute, breathe deeply, and just sing: “Que sera, sera. Whatever will be, will be.” Save yourself from worrying, because you can always fight another day.
Que sera, sera, my fellow traveler.
